The book I am writing my report on is called: ”When You Reach Me” Written by Rebecca Stead, published by Penguin Random House, 2010. This story takes place in Broadway, New York in the 1980’s. The story is about a twelve year old girl named Miranda who lives alone with her mom (she has never even met her dad) . She has only one best friend, Sal, who has suddenly ended the friendship after a he unexpectedly gets beaten up on the street whilst walking home with miranda. After that incident, she starts receiving mysterious letters by an anonymous sender. The letters seemed to be trying to prevent something bad from happening in the near future. And after she’d shared the first letter with her mom, the person who wrote them then asked her in the next letter not to share any of the others with anyone. The letters always seemed to predict events that would happen to Miranda in only a few weeks time. Miranda was also very confused and slightly scared after each letter that she had received. One day, when she was assigned to help the schools dentist, she met a student named Marcus, who she then realised was the boy who beat up Sal. The first interaction between Marcus and Miranda was while she was reading her favourite book about time travel and Marcus said: “some people think it's possible, you know” - he pointed at Mirandas book “time travel”. This is a very important part of the story because it foreshadows events that occur in the conclusion. At lunch breaks, between school hours, she starts working at a sandwich shop called “Jimmys” with 2 new friends that she has made. Jimmy, the owner, has a little plastic Fred Flintstone bank which is stuffed with two dollar notes and one day it is gone. A day or two pass after the Flintstone bank has gone missing. Miranda goes to a coffee shop and the owner, Belle, tells her that the strange homeless man (AKA "the laughing man" in the community) that is always at the corner of Mirandas street, has recently come into the shop a lot, and only paid with two dollar notes. At that moment she suspected that he was the one who had stolen the Flintstone bank, because it was very uncommon to see a two dollar note in the 80’s. The next day, she was walking home from school when she saw Sal about a block ahead of her, when suddenly Marcus comes up the street and instantly Sal starts running out of fear of Marcus. Marcus was yelling for him to stop running but Sal just went on, fearfully running faster and faster, while looking back at him, and then suddenly Miranda realised that Marcus wasn’t trying to hurt Sal but rather save his life. Sal was running into the road, still looking behind him, not realising a big truck was speeding towards him. Miranda yelled:”SAL STOP!” and she kept thinking:”SAL IS GOING TO DIE, SAL IS GOING TO DIE!” . All of a sudden the laughing man jumped out in front of the truck and kicked Sal away. The laughing man had saved Sals and Marcus’ lives. He was just lying there on the ground, dead. Everyone was in shock, Marcus was bent over sitting on his knees on the floor crying. Miranda had realised that the laughing man was the one writing the letters, because in all of his letters to her, he kept writing that the journey is a hard one and that he was going to save one of her friends, and also himself. After a lot of thought she had also found out that the laughing man was Marcus, but he had travelled back in time to save Sal and his younger self. After those few dramatic days passed, everything started to come together. Sal and miranda became friends again, Miranda met her dad for the first time and she stopped getting the letters. I would definitely highly recommend this book, it's very exciting, funny but at times also a little sad. I also think that the book is very well written.
